“I didn’t go into my pregnancy knowing I’d want a Doula. Honestly, I wasn’t even that sure what a Doula was. I had watched The Business of Being Born and thought it was really cool that some of those women could give birth without medication, but I still didn’t really know the difference between a midwife and a Doula. When I decided that I wanted to have my baby in a birthing center, I knew I was going to need some support…and I was very sure I didn’t want it to be from a parade of my family. I wanted something intimate and as close to my birth plans as possible, so I started researching. During my research and after one interview with two Doulas (very bizarre), a friend recommended Crystal. Again, I had no idea what to expect, but she was so warm and open that I knew right away that she was who I wanted by my side. She asked questions and answered questions and was very available. Even the most trivial things, she reassured me were worth asking. The one thing that stood out the most to me was that she met with my husband and I to discuss postnatal stress. He and I had talked about it briefly, but we had idea what to expect (it was our first baby) and my husband was pretty sure it would be “no sweat”. That conversation caused a little bit of friction between us, but it helped open the door for further discussion and when we were in the thick of it (baby blues, breastfeeding drama, exhaustion) it gave us a platform to express our feelings and make adjustments. I had a very quick labor/delivery (4 hours total), but she was so encouraging when I needed her and so quiet when I needed that. “Crystal is an amazing, dedicated and knowledgeable doula. I had no idea what to expect when I asked her to attend my 4th birth and 3rd VBAC. She came and helped my husband and I decide what we wanted for our birth as well as how he can better support me during the whole process. I truly feel like her support gave me the confidence to do my first unmedicated delivery! Baby girl took 5 days to get here, but Crystals continuous support helped me trust that my body was doing what it was supposed to do. When baby arrived we soon discovered she was 10.6 lbs! Woah!
